FLOW Overview
The FLOW project addresses the critical need for gender-sensitive approaches in youth sports and physical education. This innovative initiative recognizes that girls aged 13-19 face unique challenges in physical activity participation, particularly related to the menstrual cycle’s impact on their performance and engagement. By developing tailored training programs and raising awareness on sensitive topics, FLOW aims to create equal opportunities and inclusive environments where all young female athletes can thrive.
The project goes beyond simple adaptation of existing programs—it represents a comprehensive rethinking of how we support adolescent girls in sports. Through targeted education and awareness campaigns, FLOW empowers youth workers, teachers, and coaches with the knowledge and skills to address topics that are often overlooked but critically important for girls’ full participation in physical activities.
With a focus on collaboration across four European countries, FLOW is committed to transforming how we approach female empowerment in sports, ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to participate fully, confidently, and without barriers that limit their potential.

Project Activities Overview
The FLOW project commenced with comprehensive project management structures to ensure effective coordination among all four partner organizations. A thorough needs analysis was conducted across Germany, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Serbia to identify current gaps and best practices in supporting girls’ physical activity participation.
A multi-platform awareness-raising campaign is being launched, utilizing social media channels popular among young people, particularly TikTok and Instagram. These campaigns feature youth ambassadors—girls who share their own experiences and empower their peers to stay active and engaged in sports regardless of the challenges they face.
The dissemination activities are designed to reach a wide audience including educators, policymakers, sports organizations, and the general public. By sharing research findings, training materials, and campaign outcomes, FLOW aims to create lasting change in how society approaches girls’ participation in physical activities.

The cornerstone of the project is the development of a train-the-trainer program specifically designed for youth workers, teachers, and coaches. This program equips professionals with the knowledge and skills to address sensitive topics like menstrual cycle education, hormonal changes, and their impact on physical performance. Participants learn how to create safe spaces for discussions and implement gender-sensitive approaches in their sports programs.
Throughout the project, continuous monitoring and evaluation ensure that activities remain aligned with objectives and responsive to the needs of the target group. Regular transnational meetings facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration among partners, creating a strong network of expertise in female empowerment through sports.
Impact of FLOW (Project in Progress)
The FLOW project is expected to create significant and lasting impact across multiple levels. Youth workers, teachers, and coaches participating in the train-the-trainer program will gain enhanced competencies to lead sensitive conversations and implement gender-responsive approaches in their work. This improved skill set will directly benefit thousands of girls aged 13-19 who will experience more supportive and understanding sports environments.
The comprehensive training program being developed will serve as a valuable resource for sports organizations and educational institutions across Europe. By standardizing approaches to menstrual cycle education and female-specific needs in sports, FLOW aims to break down long-standing barriers that have prevented girls from fully participating in physical activities.
The awareness-raising campaigns on social media platforms will reach a broad audience of young girls, parents, educators, and the general public. By normalizing conversations about menstruation and its impact on sports, the project contributes to breaking taboos and creating a more open, supportive culture around female athletes.
Youth ambassadors involved in the campaigns will develop leadership skills, confidence, and advocacy abilities that extend beyond the project duration. These young women will become role models in their communities, inspiring other girls to remain active and engaged in sports.
The improved menstrual cycle education among girls aged 13-19 is expected to lead to increased sports participation, better management of physical activity during different cycle phases, and enhanced overall well-being. Girls who understand their bodies and receive proper support are more likely to maintain active lifestyles throughout adolescence and into adulthood.
At the organizational level, partner organizations will strengthen their capacity to implement gender-sensitive programming, contributing to the broader European agenda on gender equality and youth empowerment. The network created through FLOW will continue to serve as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration on future initiatives.
