Overview

Get in the Game (GITG) addresses a critical gender gap in youth sports participation across Europe. According to Eurobarometer 472, men exercise, play sport, and engage in physical activity significantly more than women in the EU. While young people are among the most active segments of the European population, young girls still participate far less than young males.

The statistics are stark: only 6% of young women aged 15-24 engage regularly in physical activity, compared to 12% of young males in the same age group. Even more concerning, 33% of young girls never engage in physical education, compared to just 15% of young males. This gender disparity is particularly pronounced in team sports that are traditionally associated with men.

GITG recognizes that involving young girls in sports is essential for their development of crucial skills and attitudes of self-fulfillment, while simultaneously providing important opportunities for engagement and involvement in society. The project promotes access to team sports activities directly through schools, which is the easiest and most direct way to reach young girls who seldom show interest in sports due to feeling uncomfortable, inadequate, or frightened of social confrontation.

As a partner in this ambitious project coordinated by Racing Club de Cannes (France), CNBA contributes expertise in inclusive sports education and works alongside partners from Italy, Portugal, and Greece to create lasting change for young female athletes.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES OVERVIEW

Empowering young girls in sports through inclusive, engaging activities and training teachers & coaches to create equal opportunities

Get In The Game (GITG) aims to raise awareness about young girls’ sports opportunities and train teachers and coaches to provide more inclusive, egalitarian, and engaging sports activities. The project is an international cooperation effort including NGOs, Sport organizations, Schools and Federations established in national realities characterized by a peculiar yet interrelated condition in youth well-being and sports.

GITG promotes access to team sports activities directly through the school, which is the easiest and most direct way to provide different proposals to involve young girls who seldomly show interest in sports for several reasons like feeling uncomfortable, inadequate or frightened of social confrontation.

  • Perform research on good practices of promotion of equal opportunities in Sport for youngsters. The study will be focused on the best practices for the inclusion in sports of young girls through online/offline social campaigning.

  • Develop a Training Toolkit for teachers and trainers in charge of providing sports activities at school, aimed at developing inclusive, egalitarian and engaging sport activities to empower young girls to play a protagonist role in sports.

  • Organize local activities during which teachers and trainers will conduct online and offline awareness-raising activities for youth, the local community and local sport/youth stakeholders.

The vision of the Get In The Game (GITG) project is to create a more inclusive and empowering environment for young girls in sports. By raising awareness about their sports opportunities and providing teachers and coaches with the tools and knowledge to offer more inclusive, egalitarian, and engaging sports activities, GITG seeks to remove obstacles that prevent young girls from participating in sport and physical activities.
